Hello, reader. Happy leap day. How’s life? I interviewed my new friend Jess Coble of the Zero Collective about noise. I’m proud of how it turned out. I like what Jess told me about art practice: You are what you do, so do what you love.
Yes, I live by that too. Please listen to the interview here.
Jess tells us what noise is, how living in Los Angeles, California influences his work, and how he keeps the dream alive. He mentions his daily drops and how visual art ties in with sound. Jess describes his time reflecting at a secluded cabin, when he ran away to the circus, the relationship between noise and substance use, and gives advice to new noisers just starting out.
He says not to over-focus on the gear. We don’t need all the expensive machines. We can make noise right now, with what we have around.
noise
I used to blog here every day, which was a spiritual practice. And there was a time in Las Vegas that I rode trike every morning, for my survival. That was a daily thing– so healing.
Recently I was in Portland with Ming and Bag. We were there for a weekend, and we visited a synth store. I got to fulfill a life-long dream of playing theremin.
This was not an old school theremin, but some modern version. What a thrill.
I played a wogglebug also, and some beautiful expensive noise toys I had no intention of buying. This one is wooden and I think a thousand bucks.
If you are what you do, I’m a lot of fun. I love learning.
thanks
Thank you to Bag for helping me have fun at the synth store by encouraging me to put on the headphones and try things out. I love how you flip a switch and show the world to me. You are a helpful pumpkin.
Thank you to Ming for enabling my good life by taking me on beautiful trips and loving me unconditionally with so much skill and consideration.
My first time going somewhere, I’m overwhelmed by the space. So I hope I can return to the synth store to play with sound toys again, with my wits about me. And I hope I can interview Jess Coble again someday, now that I know how he speaks and a little of his kind spirit.
