nurses

Hello, reader. How are you doing? What’s your type? I have a thing for transmasc enby autistic artists–especially traumatized ones! Long haired Asians are pretty amazing and will turn my head. Ming ruined me long ago. Activist hippies I get mixed up with often, and zinesters are bomb. But long term, definitely– I have a thing for nurses.

first nurse

The first nurse I was in love with was a poet friend, older than me, when I was a teenager. He let me rest in his bed when he was out. I read the “letters” section of his strange erotic magazines and had my mind blown.

He taught me “It’s not who you know–it’s who you blow” and “Never have sex with anyone crazier than yourself” which I am still pondering 30+ years later.

He was a queer witch and showed me undeniably, living it right in front of me, that there was a possible life for me. I didn’t need to have the life I was raised to have, the life my dad was attempting, about buying things, avoiding truth, and insulating myself from reality.

My nurse friend showed me that pleasure is why we’re here. I create the life he modeled– I create my own version for myself, now with the radical faeries. He died in San Francisco not long ago.

Phyllis

Second nurse friend I was in love with was my friend Phyllis who was a doctor of nursing and protected me at the ashram. She was golden–the choir director–my bestie in Sacramento, but old enough to be my grandparent. She died not long ago as well.

An amazing mother, she had also worked as a raisin farmer in California’s central valley. She wrote books, taught piano, and was a multi-musician. Like me, she was a survivor of violation in childhood.

I miss Phyllis, but I honor her. She got old, at least.

Ming

Then Ming is my third nurse, on the journey of life with me. It’s been 15 years. Caring, supportive, brilliant, and deeply loving. We are so married. Please keep us in your prayers.

Ming and I are greater than the sum of our parts. Ming is proof that God loves me and wants me to be happy. She sent Ming so I could have a chance to survive and do my life’s work. Well, she might have had other reasons too.

Thank God for these amazing nurses. Who would I be without you?
