“There’s something wrong with this salad. It’s the most delicious salad in the world. They must have put drugs in it or something,” I said to Ming.
Dear reader, how are you doing? What is salad? Have you thought about this?
Oh, I have. Valid salad–invalid salad. Just a food that’s cold, like potato salad vs potatoes. The lettuce factor. The way jello can be involved.
What a dressing is! Dressing vs sauce!
I think of jello as trauma passed down through the generations. But some people– such as Ming– love jello, as well as marshmallows, which can also appear in old fashioned salads like ambrosia.
anarchy
“I’m from the anarchy, and I’m here to help you,” is a sentence I like this morning. It’s a spoof of the sentence, “I’m from the government, and I’m here to help you,” which is a contradiction. Something like an oxymoron.
I’m from the salad, and I’m here to help you would be a fun spoof too. I imagine a carrot shred leaping out of the bowl to do some proposed colonizer heroics.
You know how when you cut a carrot, and you let it sit for a while in the air, it gets that white patina as it starts to dry out. I’ve never heard anyone talk about that before. The carrot patina.
If I make potato salad this morning for a brief road trip, from potatoes I boiled yesterday, I would like shred carrot for the nutrition and beautiful orange. Probably I will microplane it. I used to microplane garlic a lot in salads, to get it that fine.
Also I remember tinned mandarin oranges to put in salad. Those were the days!
questions for discussion
What do you think about a lot but never talk about?
What’s the most delicious salad you ever ate?
Are you good at salad?
Are you good at eating enough of all the things, like enough protein, greens, etc for what your body wants?
How much does capitalism limit what foods you eat?
If we admit capitalism limits access to the foods we need, like people are eating sad foods rather than what they really need, can we all admit capitalism was a bad idea and do something different now?
Can we have a do over?
Do you like jello?
What’s your favorite food bank?
How would you eat, if you could eat anything?
Ming
Often I say that free is my favorite flavor, but in reality, Ming is my favorite flavor. I put my shawl on Ming before heading to the restaurant bathroom and discovered a new form of beauty.

This post made me laugh out loud – a rarity for me these days. Thanks for that. My best jello story is from the Appalachian Trail. I’d done 26 miles that day to catch up to two elder women I’d been chasing for 160 miles after starting two weeks after they did. I finally caught them at Eagle Mountain Shelter. I was at the far end of utter exhaustion. They put me to bed and fed me hot jello which I drank gratefully. Orange flavored. It was so delicious, not just because it tasted good but because they were caring for me.
such a great story, thank you. I love you. gmorning.
I should also confess a fantasy I have, of being with rowdy friends (I need to meet such, first!) in a restaurant, everybody in fine form. I would look through the menu and find the cheapest thing on it, which is usually jello (this is not a FANCY restaurant!). Then as a server came to take our orders, I would stand up and sweep my arm magnanimously over all the other customers in the restaurant and shout “JELLO! For EVERYBODY!!!!”
aw, that made ME laugh. I love to imagine it. thank you, dear one.
