St Patrick

Dear friend, I was in a sacred, holy place which is simultaneously mundanely everyday, where we can eat oatmeal and chop a lot of carrots. I saw this bottle of hot sauce with St Patrick stuck to it, and of course I thought of you.

St Patrick

Both St Patrick and hot sauce are (or were) important to you. You’re the only person I’ve ever known who carried around hot sauce in their pocket. The dried mango and big jar of nutritional yeast are not off-base either. Long ago at Earth Abides Catholic Worker Farm, you called nutritional yeast hippie dust and/or nootch.

Big flavors, big sensations I associate with you.

I’m grateful for your family these days, elsewhere. Grateful you showed me Earth Abides and we sang Ya Devi together in that room with the big art of a nebula. I had not played piano in a long time. Some ideas of community you helped me form are rattling around in my head and probably will be all my life.

community

I don’t know much about St Patrick, but I love saints and their strange stories. I love that saints are a thing.

Thank you for bringing new spirituality into my life. Every time I prayed with you, sang with you, resisted nuclear weapons and war, and took the holy sacrament with you, I learned something. Some of your songs I carry with me.

The love my spouse feels for you is remarkable.

a few updates

I kind of like driving these days, or at least I don’t hate and dread it like I used to. Thank you for modeling enjoying driving and encouraging me to practice.

Thank you for your playfulness and joy of being. It’s been fascinating to see that unfold. Thank you for modeling that we don’t need to be ruled by fear.

Blessings to you and your journey.

We love you,
