how making enchiladas is like swimming, damage done by PE teachers in the 1980s, Ming says yes

Yesterday was Ming’s first time taking a sabbath with me.  It was great.  In the morning, we cooked three trays of enchiladas–two red, one green.  It involved many steps.  We made rice also. As I got more and more exhausted, I realized that making enchiladas was like swimming, for me.  When I was a kid,… Read More »

what Laura-Marie is

Ming was at the benefit for Gail.  He went early to help set up, then tabled and ate some foods and enjoyed the music.  He said it was well-attended.  Here’s our friend R performing. It’s a windy night–the windchimes are jangling like there’s no tomorrow.  My right eye is hurting and sometimes itchy, hopefully just… Read More »

twenty four questions that bother me

“What are you doing?  It’s not morning,” I told Ming. “I had a nightmare,” he said. “Oh, poor baby.  Come here,” I said.  We hugged. “You’re awake too,” he said. “I’ve been up and down like a Jack in the box.  Without the curly fries,” I said.  This made me laugh. Now he’s unloading the… Read More »

sad stationery on a windy day

When I see Thanksgiving cards and Halloween cards, I think of when I was penpals with my cousin who was in jail.  I would send him cards for any reason.  When I see those cards in the store, I feel tender and sad–the loved ones in jail, something colorful to put in the mail to… Read More »

fall garden thoughts: okra bloom, wildness, thanks for the food

Hey, guess what.  The okra is blooming again! Honestly, I never intended to eat it.  I always wanted it for the flowers. Growing stuff is a joy.  It’s like vibrant art that changes kind of by itself, and some of it is delicious.  It’s beautiful and nourishes my soul, to see every day by our… Read More »

the power of weird, what is authenticity, Mexican-Americans

“If I left some cough drops with a note on the fence for that neighbor, would that be weird?” I asked Ming. “Yeah,” he said. “But that doesn’t mean I shouldn’t do it,” I said. “Right,” Ming said. “It’s not like weird would really hurt them–they’re already hurt.” The first year our friend P made… Read More »

soup story: garlic broth, the joy of pasta, the power of cojita cheese, a gesture

I was at this red tent women’s group–my friend made soup.  It was pasta soup with beans, but she made it with chicken stock, so I didn’t have any.  I was hungry and wanted soup, so I was sad–it was one of the first fall evenings of the year.  I guess I was the only… Read More »

bagel battle

Who do you think won the bagel battle?  In this corner, we have kalamata olives on cream cheese, a brilliant choice.  In this corner, we have green olives on cream cheese, something more familiar. Both were delicious.  But in the end, green olives were victorious, thanks to their pungency.   Intenser flavor was the winner.

kindness isn’t a special way to treat someone who proved they deserve it

I used to have a thing for pallets.  Ming took this picture of me with the regular pallets and special blue ones. I also got excited about pipes, patch, and concrete trucks, when I was younger.  Don’t ask me why.  Like little kids can get crazy about dinosaurs, tractors, or trains?  I think it’s sweet… Read More »
